Call for Artists
NCAM is seeking an Indigenous artist or a team of Indigenous artists to create seven paper-based silhouette dioramas to be featured in an upcoming exhibition celebrating Michi Saagiig, the local dialect of Anishinaabemowin. This exhibition is being created under the guidance of e wiindmaagzijig, an Indigenous Advisory Circle brought together to lead this project.
Gidinawendimin, meaning “we are all related”, is a celebration of Michi Saagiig culture. Funded in part by the Government of Canada, this inaugural exhibition will open at the new NCAM in Cobourg, Fall 2025.
Featuring graphic art and animations by James Monkman, design by Entro, and sound recordings by local Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Community members, this multi-media exhibit honours four characteristics of the Michi Saagiig language: Alive, Beautiful, Resilient, and Healing. The commissioned art will be featured in the “Resilient” section of the exhibit.
Eligibility
This opportunity is open to Indigenous artists – emerging or established – with a connection to the Michi Saagiig territory or other Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. Artists who wish to collaborate may consider submitting a joint proposal.
Artists working in paper art, shadow art or diorama construction are especially encouraged to apply.
Artwork description
The commissioned work will be seven paper-based silhouette dioramas crafted from cut-out file folders. Each scene should reflect themes of Indigenous perseverance, resilience, and intergenerational connection.
Each diorama will be installed inside a standard sized cardboard file box and backlit to cast shadows and interact with light and sound. Each will be viewed through a slot in the front of the box.
Audio recordings of local Indigenous children singing children’s songs will play from a speaker within some of the boxes. The faint sounds of singing will become louder and more distinct as visitors stop and peer inside. Detailed specifications and sound recordings will be sent to the artist upon selection.
