Construction launches on new safety features for Prince Edward Street Railway Crossing in Brighton

Cobourg, ON – August 30, 2021 – Local municipalities and railway authorities are partnering to add new safety features to the Prince Edward Street (County Road 64) railway crossing in Brighton. Work is scheduled to begin on August 31, 2021 and continue until late fall 2021.

New features will include:

  • A change from two areas to cross the tracks down to one (no stopping between the two sets of tracks)
  • Sidewalk widening on both approaches to the tracks
  • Installation of pedestrian railings
  • Installation of flashers, bells and gates at the pedestrian crossings

“The new safety features at the Prince Edward Street Railway Crossing in Brighton will provide the travelling public with clearer direction for approaching and proceeding through this at-grade crossing,” states Warden Bob Crate. “We appreciate the investment of Rail Safety Improvement Plan funding from the federal government to make these enhancements, and to share helpful railway safety resources with the community to improve public safety. We look forward to working with our partners to implement these measures by the late fall.”

These enhancements are being made in response to a steady increase in traffic in this area as well as the frequency and speed of passing trains, increased pedestrian usage of this crossing, and the proximity of the crossing to residential areas.

No road closures are anticipated during construction; however, lane restrictions may be in place during some phases of work. For the safety of both motorists and on-site workers, community members are reminded to please slow down and use caution when passing through the construction zone.

When approaching any railway crossing, community members are also reminded to always:

  • Slow down
  • Be prepared to stop
  • Look in both directions
  • Listen for oncoming trains before proceeding through crossings.

Put simply: ‘Stop, Look, Listen and Live!’
