County flies Canadian flag at half-mast for National Day of Honour

Cobourg, ON – May 9, 2014 – The Canadian flag at Northumberland County Headquarters will fly at half mast today in recognition of the ‘National Day of Honour’. This day was declared by Royal Proclamation on March 18, 2014, in commemoration of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan."Northumberland County honours the men and women of our Canadian Armed Forces, along with their families and friends, for their contributions and sacrifices during the Afghanistan mission," stated Warden Linda Thompson. "On this National Day of Honour, we proudly join with municipalities across the country to thank these individuals for their valour and service in representing Canada."

Over 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces personnel served in Afghanistan over 12 years. Events are planned in Ottawa and across Canada today to commemorate the services rendered and the lives lost, including a parade from the Canadian War Museum to Parliament Hill, as well as a national moment of silence at 1:30 p.m.
