Cobourg, ON – April 13, 2023 – Northumberland County today raised the Dig Safe flag on the Community Flagpole in recognition of Dig Safe Month.

April is 'Dig Safe Month' in Ontario and across Canada, aimed at raising awareness of safe digging practices to improve personal safety and also reduce damages to underground infrastructure.

As the weather warms up and outdoor projects kick-off, Northumberland County residents and contractors are reminded to ‘Call or Click Before You Dig’. Contact Ontario One Call to check for water and sewer connections, gas lines, telephone, electricity, internet, and TV cable wires in the area before breaking ground on any landscaping, construction, or other projects that require digging.

“Dig Safe Month serves as a reminder of everyone's responsibility to put safety first and protect the well-being of our community,” states Warden Mandy Martin. “It is estimated that, every year, in excess of $1 billion in damage to underground infrastructure is done across Canada due to unsafe digging practices. With a quick call or click we can prevent such damage and the resulting loss of essential services, and protect our families, neighbours, and coworkers from injury, health and safety risks.”

The Dig Safe Flag will fly on the County’s Community Flagpole from April 13 to 20, 2023.
