Enhanced Railway Features for Prince Edward Street railway crossing in Brighton

Cobourg, ON – July 25, 2023 – Northumberland County, in collaboration with the Municipality of Brighton and railway partners, proudly announces the completion of construction work at the Prince Edward Street (CR 64) railway crossing in Brighton. This significant upgrade comes in response to a growing volume of vehicle traffic, a large number of pedestrians and cyclists using the crossing, and increased frequency and speed of passing trains.  

These newly implemented safety features are a significant milestone in ensuring the well-being of all users navigating the railway crossing. With a strong focus on safety enhancement, these improvements offer advanced warning systems and barriers to provide all users with clear direction on how to safely approach and travel through the railway crossing. 

“We are thrilled to introduce the latest safety measures in the heart of Brighton,” commented Denise Marshall, Director of Public Works. “These changes set a new standard of safety around the tracks and trains in Brighton, providing residents and visitors with a secure way to safely approach and cross the double tracks.”

Leslie Whiteman, Director of Public Works and Infrastructure for the Municipality of Brighton also expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts, stating, "The safety of our community is of paramount importance to us. The completion of these enhanced safety features at the Prince Edward Street railway crossing is a vital step forward in our commitment to protecting the well-being of our residents and visitors alike."

Key enhancements to the railway crossing include:

  • No stopping zones between the tracks by vehicles
  • Clearly marked pavements and sidewalk
  • Expanded sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Dedicated pedestrian barriers and railings
  • Advanced warning systems with flashers, bells

To further familiarize the public with the newly implemented safety features, Northumberland County has produced two information videos—one for motorists and another for pedestrians. These videos offer step-by-step instructions on how to safely navigate the at-grade railway crossing.
