First draft of County Official Plan available for comment - Public open houses scheduled for May 21 and 22

Cobourg, ON – April 30, 2014 – The first draft of the County Official Plan, which has been under development since the fall of 2013, is now available for public review and comment. This Plan will be a policy framework that guides local municipalities and the County in planning land development and use, in support of long-term economic growth and sustainability.

"Given that the seven lower-tier municipalities in the County already have Official Plans, this first generation County Official Plan deals primarily with land-use issues that cross municipal boundaries," indicated planning consultant Nick McDonald. "These include growth and settlement issues, economic development, and the protection of the natural environment. The focus is really on thinking regionally while acting locally."

The County is seeking public input on this first draft Plan, and will be hosting open houses on the following dates:

Wednesday, May 21, 2014
Baltimore Community Centre
23 Community Centre Road
Baltimore, Ontario

Thursday, May 22, 2014
Warkworth Legion
2 Norham Road
Warkworth, Ontario

The draft will be circulated to local municipal Councils and agencies for feedback. Written comments are also encouraged from the public, and should be submitted no later than May 26, 2014 to weirb@northumberlandcounty.ca.

Comments submitted will be considered in development of a second draft, due to County Council by June. If approved, this second draft will become the subject of a formal public meeting.

The draft Plan, along with a summary memo from the project consultant, previously-released issues papers and other resources are available on the County website at www.northumberlandcounty.ca/official_plan.
