Official Plan update moves forward with Natural Heritage System and Growth Management amendments

Cobourg, ON – Friday, November 26, 2021 – Northumberland County staff will be providing updates on the progress of Northumberland Next – an initiative to update the County Official Plan – at the Economic Development, Tourism and Land Use Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. The Northumberland Next initiative involves a series of amendments to the Official Plan, which will guide community growth and development in Northumberland over the next 30 years.

At this meeting, staff will be presenting the final recommendations for a Natural Heritage System for Northumberland. Required under provincial legislation, the Natural Heritage System was the first amendment presented as part of Northumberland Next. This system, which has been in development since 2018, will preserve and enhance significant natural features and areas across the County such as wetlands, woodlands and watercourses.

In addition, staff at this meeting will also be introducing the second amendment of the Northumberland Next initiative: the Growth Management amendment. The process to develop this amendment will involve review of maps and policies related to long-term growth and land needs in Northumberland to ensure our community is prepared for future growth.

To launch this effort, a draft Growth Forecast and Urban Lands Needs Analysis Report is now available for review and feedback on Join In Northumberland – the County’s online public consultation portal. Additional information about the growth management amendment will also be available at an upcoming virtual open house and virtual public meeting in early 2022. Virtual meeting dates and details will be posted on Join In Northumberland as they become available.
