Proclamation - National AccessAbility Week, May 29- June 4, 2022

Event: National AccessAbility Week

Date: May 29 – June 4, 2022

"Whereas under the Accessible Canada Act 2019, c. 10 (Section 133), throughout Canada each year, the week starting on the last Sunday in May is to be known as National AccessAbility Week, and is an opportunity to promote accessibility and inclusion across communities and workplaces, and a time to celebrate the contributions of Canadians with disabilities and to be inspired to further break down barriers; and

Whereas a national accessibility week was first established following Paralympian Rick Hanson’s Man in Motion World Tour in 1987; and

Whereas the County of Northumberland is committed to accessibility; and

Whereas for the week of May 29 – June 4, 2022, the Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee (NAAC) approved a variety of awareness activities, in consultation with Communications; and

Whereas the theme of “Let’s Make Northumberland More Accessible” raises awareness that we can work together to improve services for the Northumberland community; and

Whereas the County staff named below were honoured with a “Helping Hands Award” to recognize their efforts at embracing accessibility by going above and beyond mere compliance with accessibility legislation:

Drew Allan and Joel Johnson, Maintenance Technicians, Public Works, Facilities

  • For excellence in the Design of Public Spaces, installing 20+ automatic door operators in County buildings over the past 12-18 months, installing several accessible washroom bits with automatic door operators, touch free buttons, emergency assistance button (with light and audible signal. All of these installations will help to improve the accessibility of buildings for employees and customers.
  • In addition, Drew and Joel’s skills and expertise in doing these installations in-house allows the County to install these in cost effective ways, allowing a much larger quantity of door operators to be added. They continue to show leadership in always trying to improve accessibility at County and NCHC owns properties.

Rebecca Carman, Manager Housing Services, Community and Social Services and Officer of the Board for Northumberland County Housing Corporation (NCHC)

  • For excellence in Customer Service and Design of Public Spaces, committing to understanding and following the AODA requirements in the housing built environment, exceeding minimum accessibility standards where possible and considering accessibility from the beginning of a project rather than an afterthought.
  • In addition, Rebecca continues to highlight and support implementation of accessibility needs for existing housing tenants to improve their experience but in individual units and to housing sites and supporting accessibility with Non-Profit Housing Providers.
  • Lastly, Rebecca is a champion for the creation of accessible documents; and

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Robert Crate, on behalf of Northumberland County Council do hereby proclaim May 29 to June 4, 2022 as National AccessAbility Week in Northumberland County."
