Proclamation - National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 2022

Event: National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day

Date: June 2022

“Whereas the Month of June is recognized as National Indigenous History Month – an opportunity to increase the visibility of Indigenous contributions, experiences, values and cultures, and to build bridges of understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people throughout Canada and in Northumberland County; and

Whereas June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to honour the unique history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples; and

Whereas Northumberland County recognizes that the Mississauga Nation – on whose territory Northumberland County is located – are the collective stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity, and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come; and

Whereas Northumberland County strives to be an inclusive community and encourages all residents to reflect, learn, and take action in a meaningful way towards reconciliation in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Robert Crate, on behalf of Northumberland County Council, do hereby proclaim the month of June 2022 as National Indigenous History Month and the date of June 21, 2022 as National Indigenous Peoples Day in Northumberland County.”

Dated this 18th day of May, 2022

 R.J. (Bob) Crate, Warden
