Provincial Sledge Hockey Competitors Featured at Cougars’ Game - $1 from every ticket sold to be donated to 2014 ParaSport Games

Cobourg, ON – November 11, 2013 – At the November 16 Cobourg Cougars hockey game, athletes from the Ontario and Quebec provincial sledge hockey teams will demonstrate how competitors of all abilities can participate in Canada’s national pastime. During the first intermission of the Cobourg vs. Lindsay game, sledge teams will take to the ice in a show of speed and agility to demonstrate this adapted sport.

"Sledge hockey is fast-paced and competitive, and our players are elite-level athletes," stated Ken Cullum, Coach, Ontario Sledge Hockey Team. "As Canadians, we love our hockey. This demonstration is about showcasing a different way to enjoy the sport, and highlighting the talent and skill-level of our para-athlete community."

The sledge-hockey demonstration is being coordinated by the Northumberland ParaSport Games Or-ganizing Committee together with the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association, while the Ontario and Que-bec teams are in town for a series of games at the Cobourg Community Centre from November 15 to 17. The demonstration is part of pre-legacy events designed to build awareness of para-sports in the lead-up to the Northumberland 2014 ParaSport Games, taking place May 30-June 1. Similar events will be staged in the coming months, giving the communities of Northumberland County an opportunity to learn about the ParaSport movement and the inspirational athletes involved, before the Games officially come to town.

"Excitement is really starting to build for the 2014 Games," stated Games Organizing Committee Chair Paul Macklin. "We are grateful to these athletes for taking the time to demonstrate the strength and skill required for this sport. It sets the stage for the level of energy and elite competition that our communi-ties can expect from the various sports that will be coming to town."

The Cobourg Cougars will be generously donating $1.00 from every ticket sold for the November 16 game to the 2014 ParaSport Games. Hockey fans throughout Northumberland County are invited to attend, both to enjoy a night of excellent sport and to show support for ParaSport athletes at home and throughout our province.
