September is Hunger Action Month in Northumberland

Cobourg, ON – September 1, 2023 – Last month, Northumberland County Council proclaimed September as ‘Hunger Action Month’ in Northumberland. Hunger Action Month is dedicated to raising awareness of food insecurity, advocating to end hunger and poverty across Canada, and recognizing the work being done by local food banks, school nutrition programs, community meals and hunger relief programs, to take action against hunger.

“Local food banks and food security programs support many individuals, families, seniors, and children in our community,” states County Food Security Services Manager Rob O’Neil. “In 2022, over 4,200 Northumberland residents accessed support through local food banks. On a broader scale, more than 587,000 individuals accessed a food bank in Ontario between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. Food insecurity affects people all across the country. Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to come together to raise awareness of this issue and to highlight the services that collectively work together to prevent hunger in our local communities.”

Throughout September, Northumberland County Food 4 All and Northumberland’s twelve local food banks are joining Food Banks Canada and Feed Ontario in their efforts to promote initiatives to help end hunger. To get involved and take action, Northumberland community members are invited to:
