Upcoming virtual consultations regarding Growth Management amendment to County Official Plan

Cobourg, ON – April 7, 2022 – Northumberland County is currently reviewing and updating maps and policies related to long-term growth and land needs in the County’s Official plan. Residents are invited to attend an upcoming virtual consultation to learn more about the project and to share their feedback on the proposed changes.

The Growth Management Amendment process will help the County assess how new development will be planned, phased and accommodated to meet the needs of Provincial growth forecasts, which indicate an estimated population of approximately 122,000 people in Northumberland County by the year 2051.

This process is the second amendment developed as part of Northumberland Next – an initiative to update the County Official Plan through the introduction of a series of amendments, guiding community growth and development in Northumberland over the next 30 years.

In December 2021, the Northumberland Next project team presented a draft Growth Management Amendment to the Official Plan to the County Economic Development, Tourism, Land Use Planning Committee and the public. Since then, this draft amendment has been made available for public review and feedback.

As the project team prepares to develop final recommendations for the Growth Management Amendment, residents who are interested in learning more about the amendment or who have not yet provided feedback, will have an additional opportunity to share their input during virtual consultations this spring:

  • An open house with a 20-minute presentation to the public from County staff and consultants at 6 p.m., followed by a Question & Answer period
  • A public meeting with a 20-minute presentation to the Economic Development, Tourism, Land Use Planning Committee and the public for feedback

Feedback gathered during the consultations will be used to inform the final recommendation to County Council later in 2022. Once adopted by Council, the Growth Management amendment will be submitted to the province for approval, and then integrated into the County’s Official Plan.

Residents are invited to visit the County’s online consultation portal at JoinIn.Northumberland.ca to learn more about the Northumberland Next initiative. On this webpage, residents can also sign up to receive project updates directly to their inbox, review an executive summary and Council Report for the Growth Management amendment, or request a copy of the full draft amendment.
