Weed By-Law and Invasive Plants
Invasive species and noxious weeds are present in Northumberland County.
Noxious weeds
Noxious weeds are harmful to agricultural and horticultural operations.
Northumberland County's Weed Inspector enforces The Ontario Weed Control Act to prevent and control the growth of noxious weeds in our community. Under the act (R.S.O. 1990, Chapter W.5), the County's Weed Inspector can order a landowner to destroy plants labelled as noxious weeds.

Invasive plants
The Ontario Invasive Species Act prevents and controls the spread of invasive species. The act outlines two classes of invasive species: prohibited and restricted.
Examples include:
- Dog-strangling vine (also known as pale swallowwort)
- Black dog-strangling vine (also known as black swallowwort)
- Japanese knotweed
- Phragmites (also known as European common reed)
There are many invasive species not listed in the act that can still out-compete native species and change the ecology of an area.
