garbage bag with bag tag

In response to COVID-19, households will be permitted to put out one free bag of garbage per week on their regularly-scheduled collection day until May 29, 2020. A maximum two-bag limit per week per household remains in place. Port Hope rural residents will also be able to dispose of one free bag of garbage per week at the Hope Transfer station. Council will continue to assess whether an extension beyond May 29 is required.

At this time, garbage must be set out in a garbage bag to be collected. Loose garbage in cans will be rejected.

Mayors' Keep the County Clean Challenge

Every year, municipalities participate in a week-long litter clean-up campaign in an effort to keep the County clean from litter. Residents are encouraged to register with their local municipality.

In an effort to limit public gatherings as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19, the 2020 event has been cancelled.

Illegal dumping

Please report any illegally dumped garbage in one of two ways:

In your report, please let us know the location of the garbage, along with a description of the vehicle and person, if available. Please do not open any bags or remove any evidence.

People who illegally dump waste will face a fine of $305 to $5,000. You can learn more by viewing our Illegal Dumping By-law 15-10.

Medical waste subsidy

If you create large amounts of medical waste due to a medical condition, you may apply for a garbage bag-tag subsidy. If approved, you will receive a set number of free bag-tags per year to help you with the disposal of your medical waste.

View our Medical Waste Subsidy Policy.

Apply for the subsidy using the Medical Waste Exemption Application Form.
