Burnley Creek Bridge Rehabilitation Project Begins August 6

Cobourg, ON - July 25, 2024 – Northumberland County will begin the rehabilitation of the Burnley Creek Bridge, located on County Road 25 (Dominion Street) in Warkworth, starting August 6, 2024. This project is part of the County’s ongoing infrastructure investments to maintain over 100 bridges and culverts across the region.

The Burnley Creek Bridge, a single-span, two-lane rigid frame structure, constructed in 1959, will undergo extensive restoration and rehabilitation. The scope of work includes:

  • Replacement of existing concrete handrails and curbs with new metal railings.
  • Replacement of guardrails.
  • Waterproofing and refurbishing the bridge deck and approach.
  • Repairing concrete on the bridge structure and installing new deck drains.
  • Restoring embankments with rock protection to prevent erosion.

Burnley Creek Bridge detour map Construction is expected to last approximately 10 weeks. During this period, the bridge will be closed to all traffic, and a detour route will be in place via Old Hastings Road and County Road 29 (Mill Street).

To ensure safety of workers and motorists, the 50 km/hr speed zone on County Road 25, on the north side of Warkworth, will be extended, and the speed limit on Old Hastings Road will be reduced from 50 km/hr to 40 km/hr.

"The rehabilitation of Burnley Creek Bridge will help maintain community connectivity for the local road network in Warkworth," says County Director of Public Works Denise Marshall. "The bridge and embankment rehabilitation will ensure both safety and historical continuity for the Warkworth community for decades to come."

This project is a key component of Northumberland County’s comprehensive Asset Management Plan, which details information about core infrastructure assets—including roads, bridges, large culverts, retaining walls, and storm sewers—and guides investment decisions to maintain and upgrade the County’s 503 kilometers of road and 112 structures.

The County continually monitors and assesses bridges and culverts through Ontario Structure Inspection Manual inspections and targets a bridge condition of 70 or higher. Residents can track the target condition and current status of all bridges and culverts in Northumberland using our interactive map on the County’s Performance Dashboard by visiting Northumberland.ca/Dashboard.
