Stand Together, Prosper Together: Announcing the launch of the Prosper in Northumberland initiative
Cobourg, ON – March 24, 2025 – In response to rising economic challenges from international trade disputes, the wave of Canadian pride that has been sweeping the nation has taken hold in Northumberland. Recently, a coalition of 33 local businesses, associations, municipalities, and community members united to launch Prosper in Northumberland —a collaborative initiative designed to champion local businesses, strengthen our economy, and stand proudly behind local goods and services.
At a time when uncertainty looms, a commitment to Buy Local, invest in homegrown businesses and, ultimately, support our neighbours, is vital. Prosper in Northumberland is not just an initiative—it’s a movement. Together, Northumberland organizations and residents will take action to build resilience and empower our community to thrive.
What You Can Expect from Prosper in Northumberland
- Support for Local Business Owners: Workshops, resources, and training opportunities to help local entrepreneurs impacted by current economic conditions.
- Stronger Connections: We’re creating new opportunities for business collaboration and mutual growth, including business-to-business partnerships and resources.
- The Return of ‘Buy Local’: Starting with a fresh, reinvigorated campaign launching this spring, we will be encouraging everyone in our community to make a pledge: redirect a specific portion of your shopping budget from online retailers or out-of-town stores to local businesses here in Northumberland. By doing so, you’ll not only be helping to sustain jobs but also contribute to the growth of your local economy. This campaign is about making a statement that we are proudly Northumberland, proud to shop local, and proud to support Canadian businesses right here in Northumberland.
- Research and Advocacy: We will be actively gathering data to understand the impact of trade tariffs and economic uncertainty in our community, ensuring Northumberland voices and experiences are heard at all levels of government, and pushing for the support our businesses need to continue to grow.
Why It Matters
The economic landscape may be shifting, but the resolve of the Northumberland community is strong. Prosper in Northumberland is about more than just surviving—it’s about thriving. Together, by supporting local businesses, we will be building a more resilient economy that benefits everyone. It’s about creating and retaining local jobs, supporting families, and fostering a community that stands united in pride and purpose.
We will be rolling out more details about the Prosper in Northumberland initiative and the revitalized Buy Local campaign in the coming weeks. Community members are encouraged to stay tuned for ways to get involved and show support.
